Home Service Business Statistics 2026: Leads, Booking, Quotes, Payments and Reviews

Also covers demand, websites, software and labor. Last updated: October 22, 2026.

About this data: 57 statistics from 18 publishers, most published in 2025 or 2026. 13 come from government agencies, an industry association or academic research; the rest are surveys and platform data published by research firms, marketing firms and software companies, including Fasite competitors. Every figure links to its original source, and the full check log is in the downloadable stats sheet (CSV).

A home service business runs one operating cycle: a lead calls, the job gets booked, quoted, done, invoiced and paid, and a happy customer leaves a review that brings in the next lead. This page collects sourced numbers for each step, so you can see where the cycle usually leaks.

Key takeaways

  • Home service owners estimated they answered 97% of their calls, but recorded call data showed 66% (Service Direct, 2019 call performance study of 94 home service businesses). (Service Direct)
  • 27% of calls to home services businesses go unanswered, according to Invoca's 2024 analysis of its call data. (Invoca)
  • 58% of homeowners prefer to schedule home services by phone, nearly three times as many as choose online (Tinuiti 2025 survey of 1,000 US homeowners). (Tinuiti)
  • 56% of US small businesses are owed money from unpaid invoices, averaging $17.5K each (Intuit QuickBooks 2025 survey of 2,487 US small businesses). (Intuit QuickBooks)
  • 31% of consumers will only use a local business rated 4.5 stars or higher, up from 17% a year earlier (BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey, 2026). (BrightLocal)
  • 32% of small business owners had job openings they could not fill in September 2026 (NFIB Jobs Report). (NFIB)

Demand backdrop

In short: demand is steady because homes keep needing repairs, but cost pressure is making homeowners more selective.

1. Leads and phone response

In short: many calls go unanswered, owners overestimate how many they answer, and few callers leave a voicemail.

  • 27% of calls to home services businesses go unanswered. (Invoca, 2024)
  • Fewer than 3% of callers who are sent to voicemail leave a message, according to Invoca platform data. (Invoca, 2024)
  • Home service owners estimated they answered 97% of their calls; recorded call data showed they answered 66%. (Service Direct, 2019)
  • Firms that contacted a web lead within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify it as firms that waited even one hour longer. This is a 2011 study of US companies in general, not home service businesses specifically. (Harvard Business Review, 2011; the article is paywalled)
  • 62% of homeowners say they will move on if they don't hear back from a home service company quickly (Elevate Market Research, a home services marketing firm, survey of 1,200+ homeowners). (Elevate Market Research, 2025)
  • Phone is homeowners' most preferred first contact method with contractors (30.4%), followed closely by text (28.95%) and email (25.69%). Preference for text outreach from contractors rose from 19% in 2024 to 29% in 2025. (Modernize Homeowner Insights Report, 2025)
  • 53% of homeowners are comfortable with AI handling their initial chat or phone call (survey of 1,040 US homeowners). (Housecall Pro homeowner survey, 2025)

Call-answer studies compared

Study Method Sample Finding
Invoca, 2024 Platform call data Home services calls on Invoca 27% of calls unanswered
Service Direct, 2019 Recorded calls 94 home service businesses 66% answered (34% missed); owners estimated 97%
411 Locals, 2016 30-day call study 85 small businesses, 58 industries 62% unanswered (37.8% voicemail, 24.3% no response)

The studies use different methods and years, so their numbers aren't directly comparable. All three point the same way: a large share of calls to small service businesses are never answered by a person.

What to check. Count your real answer rate for two weeks, including calls that came in while you were on a job. Owners in the Service Direct study overestimated theirs by 31 points.

How Fasite handles this. Fasite's AI receptionist answers on its own local number, says it's an AI, files each call as a lead with a summary and can book a free visit. AI receptionist

2. Booking and scheduling

In short: most homeowners still book by phone, but online booking increasingly influences who they pick, and they want to know when someone is coming.

  • 58% of homeowners prefer to schedule home services over the phone, nearly three times as many as choose online; 37% of Gen Z and millennial homeowners prefer to schedule online or by email, compared with 17% of baby boomers. (Tinuiti, 2025)
  • Over 60% of homeowners who use seasonal service providers prefer to book more than a week in advance, and 28% at least a month ahead. (Tinuiti, 2025)
  • 80% of homeowners factor in online booking when deciding which pro to hire. (Housecall Pro homeowner survey, 2025)
  • Only 10.96% of homeowners say booking online is their preferred way to first contact a contractor. (Modernize Homeowner Insights Report, 2025)
  • Nearly 70% of homeowners want to know how long an appointment will last before committing to it. (Modernize, 2025)
  • Before a house call, 58% of homeowners are most reassured by receiving the technician's photo and ID, and 46% by "on my way" texts. (Housecall Pro homeowner survey, 2025)

Phone vs online booking: why the numbers differ

Question asked Result Source
Preferred way to schedule home services 58% phone Tinuiti, 2025
Preferred way to first contact a contractor 10.96% book online Modernize, 2025
Does online booking factor into who you hire? 80% yes Housecall Pro, 2025

Read together: most homeowners would still rather call, but having online booking available counts in a business's favor.

What to check. Offer at least two ways to book, and make sure every channel lands on the same calendar so a phone booking and a web booking can't collide.

How Fasite handles this. Fasite-built websites take online booking requests for real open times, and the business confirms each one in one tap. Jobs from every channel land on one schedule, and the customer gets an email when the crew taps "On my way". Scheduling and dispatch

3. Quoting and estimates

In short: homeowners compare quotes, and surprises or confusing pricing lose jobs before price itself does.

What to check. Send quotes the same day where you can, say what's included, and offer options rather than one take-it-or-leave-it number.

How Fasite handles this. Fasite estimates can offer this-or-that options and optional add-ons, and customers approve online by typing their name. Estimates

4. Invoicing and payments

In short: late payment is common, and most consumer payments are now made by card.

What to check. Look at how many days pass between finishing a job and sending the invoice, and whether customers can pay the way they already pay for everything else.

How Fasite handles this. Customers can pay a Fasite invoice by card from the invoice link, with the money going to the business's own Stripe account. Reminder emails go out on the days the owner sets. Invoicing

5. Reviews and reputation

In short: consumers expect more stars, more recent reviews and quick replies from the owner, and most will write a review if asked.

  • 31% of consumers will only use a business rated 4.5 stars or higher, up from 17% a year earlier. (BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey, 2026)
  • 47% of consumers won't use a business with fewer than 20 reviews. (BrightLocal, 2026)
  • 74% of consumers only care about reviews written in the last three months. (BrightLocal, 2026)
  • 89% of consumers expect business owners to respond to reviews. (BrightLocal, 2026)
  • 32% of consumers want a reply to their review by the following day (up from 18%), and 81% expect one within a week. (BrightLocal, 2026)
  • 28% of consumers say they will "always" write a review if asked, up from 16% in 2025. (BrightLocal, 2026)
  • 49% of homeowners left a review when the quality of work was very good, versus 24% when it was poor. (Tinuiti, 2025)

What to check. Count how many reviews you received in the last 90 days and how many you replied to. Recency and replies are what consumers say they look at.

How Fasite handles this. Owners can send a customer an email review request in one tap. How Fasite works

6. Websites and online presence

In short: most small businesses have a website, but many don't show what customers check first, and AI assistants are now part of how people find local businesses.

  • 82% of small businesses have their own website (NFIB, 2025), in line with Clutch's 2025 finding of 83%, up from 64% in 2018. (NFIB, 2025; Clutch, 2025)
  • 41% of small business websites are built on DIY builders like Wix and Squarespace; just 12% are custom-built. (Clutch, 2025)
  • 51% of homeowners say the absence of pricing information on a website is a dealbreaker. (Elevate Market Research, 2025)
  • 54% of consumers visit a business's website after reading positive reviews, up from 32% in 2019. (BrightLocal, 2026)
  • 45% of consumers now use AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier. (BrightLocal, 2026)

What to check. Open your own website on a phone and check that a customer can see what you do, roughly what it costs, your hours and how to book, without scrolling far.

How Fasite handles this. Fasite builds and runs the website, and every form, booking request and call lands in the same inbox. Websites

7. Software and tool sprawl

In short: small businesses run many separate tools, and the data in them often doesn't agree.

What to check. List every tool that holds a copy of your customer list, and count how often the same details get typed twice.

How Fasite handles this. Fasite runs leads, scheduling, estimates, invoices, card payments and review requests in one login, with one record per customer. How Fasite works

8. Labor and admin time

In short: skilled labor is hard to find, so the hours spent on admin cost more than ever.

What to check. Track one week of admin hours: calls, quotes, scheduling, invoicing and follow-up. That's the time you can win back without hiring.

How Fasite handles this. Each crew member gets a phone link with their jobs, and finished work waits in a "Ready to bill" list until the owner sends the invoice. Scheduling and dispatch

Widely repeated statistics we couldn't verify

These numbers appear on many statistics pages. We left them out because we couldn't trace them to an original study we could open. That doesn't mean they're wrong; it means we couldn't confirm them.

  • "78% of customers buy from the first company to respond." We found it only on vendor and aggregator pages, with no original study.
  • "62% will call before making a purchase" and "76% stop doing business after one bad call." The page we found cites an unnamed survey.
  • "80% of callers don't leave a message" (often attributed to Forbes). We found it only as a secondary citation, with no linked original.
  • "69% of callers don't leave voicemail messages." From a 2016 survey that mixes UK micro-businesses with a US framing.
  • "88% of SMB leaders feel overwhelmed by too many business tools." The web page gives no survey date or method; the report's own figure is 46%.
  • "Up to 25 hours a week on admin." We found only non-US samples or secondary press citations.
  • Figures from gated or unreachable reports (Angi's State of Home Spending 2025, Invoca's 2025 buyer experience and call conversion reports, Thryv's 2025 AI adoption report, and an AI-use figure in a Federal Reserve PDF we couldn't open).

Methodology

  • What we included. Statistics about US home service businesses, small businesses or their customers, from the organization that collected the data: government agencies (BLS, Federal Reserve), an industry association (NFIB), academic research (Harvard Business Review), research and marketing firms, and software vendors' own surveys or platform data. Most figures were published in 2025 or 2026. Older studies are labeled with their year and included only where we found no newer measured data.
  • Vendor research. Several sources are surveys run by software companies, including Fasite competitors (Housecall Pro, Jobber), and by marketing firms. We include them because they are the original data, report their figures as published, and show sample sizes where the source gives them. Methods differ, so compare figures across studies with care.
  • How we checked. We checked each figure against its original source on October 22, 2026, using an AI-assisted process. A person re-checked every figure in the key takeaways before publication. The check log is in the downloadable sheet.
  • Rounding. Figures appear as the source published them, including decimals.
  • Updates. We review this page quarterly and when a major source (NFIB, BrightLocal, the Federal Reserve, BLS) publishes new data. Changes are logged below.
  • Corrections. Spot an error? Email support@fasite.org. We correct it and log the change.
